19 New HIV/AIDS Cases Reported Daily, Says M'sian AIDS Council

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- Nineteen new cases of HIV/AIDS are detected daily in Malaysia, bringing the number of sufferers to 64,467 as at end of last year.
Malaysian Aids Council Executive Director Nik Mohd Fahmee Nik Hussin, who disclosed the statistics here Wednesday, described the situation as increasingly worrying.
"The council will intensify efforts to check the problem besides giving continued support to each programme carried out by the government or non-governmental organisations," he said after the launch of "Living With HIV/AIDS 2005" programme.
Welcoming the programme sponsored by the Standard Chartered Malaysia, Nik Mohd Fahmee said it should be emulated by other business sectors because not many companies were sensitive to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The business sector had a role to play in tackling the issue, he said.
Standard Chartered Malaysia has been active in initiatives to deal with HIV/AIDS, including donating money to centres treating children with HIV/AIDS, and establishing a volunteer team to carry out awareness campaigns.
