HFMD: Sarawak Improves Further

KUCHING, April 12 (Bernama) -- The peak period of the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in Sarawak has ended and the state is expected to return to normal soon.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said only 45 new cases were reported in Sarawak up to 10am Wednesday.
"We will only know whether we are free of the disease one or two weeks after the latest report," he told a news conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here, today.
Dr Chan said although the disease could not be eradicated completely, one or two cases reported a week would mean the situation was no longer serious.
Dr Chan said that on Monday the Health Department carried out checks on 67 kindergartens and primary schools in the state and there was no serious cases found.
To date, 8394 cases were reported in Sarawak and nine children had died of the disease since it was diagnosed in the state last month.
