Private hospitals act to conserve water

Several private medical centres in the Klang Valley are intensifying efforts to conserve water in their day-to-day operations as water levels in dams drop towards the critical point.
“Our housekeeping staff and cleaners have been asked to ensure no tap is left running when no one is using it,” said Subang Jaya Medical Centre executive director Datuk Dr Jacob Thomas.
He said the management had issued e-mail reminders to all staff last week of the need to conserve water during the current dry spell.
“We have in place a mechanism to handle any water shortage, including buying water from outside.
“In the meantime, we will work with the water authorities and the Health Ministry on any contingency measures to be taken,” he said.
He added that the hospital might reduce the number of public toilets on its premises to save on water for cleaning.
Pantai Medical Centre chief executive officer Choy Wah Wei said the hospital had already taken measures to conserve water, “without compromising on the hygiene of the hospital.”
“However, we have already reduced the flow of water in our taps and we are using water judiciously.”
Choy also said they would reduce the number of public toilets available.
Sunway Medical Centre chief executive officer Dr Chong Su-Lin said the hospital had yet to receive notification of any impending water rationing but was ready to adopt measures to reduce wastage.
“We are already planning to advise all employees to reduce wastage,” she said.
