KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysians just do not seem to get enough of sweets, with the average Malaysian consuming a staggering 120 milligrams of the substance, the main cause of diabetes, a day.
This is made worse as all the local "kuih" have one thing in common -- high sugar content.
Not proud of this new record set by the "Malaysia Boleh" spirit, Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek has only this advice for Malaysians with a sweet tooth -- stay away from too many sweet things.
He said the ministry's finding several years ago showed that the daily sugar intake for Malaysians should not be more than 50 milligrams per day.
"That means that Malaysians are taking 2.5 times more sugar than required," he told reporters here.
Asked about the mooncake or mid-autumn festival to be celebrated by the Chinese community on Sunday, he said that mooncakes nowadays were less sweet.
