NST: GEORGE TOWN, PENANG, Sun A total of 11 people have been hospitalised for dengue fever here since last Friday, sparking fears of another outbreak.
Fifty-eight cases were reported between Feb 26 and March 4 and 30 cases the week before.
Most of the victims have been warded at various hospitals here.
Health Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon said 700 dengue cases were reported nationwide since Feb 19.
He said the dengue hot spots in Penang were Batu Uban, Farlim and Taman Lip Sin.
"It is under control here but we are monitoring the situation. We want residents to play their role by ensuring that their areas are free of mosquito breeding grounds," he said during a visit to Sungai Dua here today.
Also present were Batu Uban state assemblyman Goh Kheng Sneah and Northeast district health officer Dr Mohd Salleh Mat Jais.
Lee said principals and teachers should ensure that schools were kept clean to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes during the coming school holidays.
