The Star MIRI: Bad habits are hard to change even among sick people. They would rather blame their tired bodies than point a finger at their unhealthy lifestyle, a survey here showed.
Australian health expert Prof Paola Ferroni, who was commissioned by the Sarawak Government to find out why Miri has the highest kidney failure incidents in the state, said: “Most sufferers blame their kidney disease on their internal body processes.
“It is interesting to note that they hardly mention their lifestyles or issues relating to nutrition, eating habits and the environment they live in.”
Prof Ferroni is the director of the Centre for International Health at Curtin University in Australia.
Prof Ferroni said while many sufferers showed a reasonable amount of knowledge about their general health and renal problems, they are often ignorant about the causes of their disease and the consequences they have to face.
“This is especially so among the younger sufferers,” she told a press conference at the Miri Red Crescent Kidney Dialysis Centre here, where she unveiled some of the findings of her survey yesterday.
