Star: KUALA LUMPUR: Fourteen-stick cigarette packs should be banned immediately, the Malaysian Women’s Action for Tobacco Control and Heath (MyWATCH) urged.
MyWATCH president Datuk Hatijah Ayob said she was disappointed that the ban did not take place in July as stated by the Health Ministry.
“We fail to understand how postponing the ban on ‘kiddie packs’ to 2010 will protect children from smoking,” she said.
Currently, cigarettes are sold in 20-stick and 14-stick packs. She said minors go for the 14-pack because it was cheaper.
Earlier this year, the Health Ministry decided to ban sales of 14-stick packs beginning July 1, in conjunction with the 2006 World No Tobacco Day.
Hatijah said the ban did not take place and there had been proposals to amend the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations to postpone the ban to 2010.
