JOHOR BAHARU, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) is prepared to provide occupational health and safety training and services to industries to be set up in the Southern Johor Economic Region (SJER), its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said Friday.
"We know that many factories will be set up in this new economic hub and as such the number of workers will increase. We are prepared to train these workers to prevent or reduce industrial accidents from taking place ," he told reporters after inspecting work progress on Niosh's new southern training campus at the Skudai Technology Park, here.
Lee said that the RM21-million campus would be able to accommodate up to 400 trainees at any one time and that it would also be a research house on the matter.
It will also offer a diploma course on occupational safety and health in collaboration with the Open University Malaysia (OUM).
Meanwhile, Lee said that Niosh also planned to set up two more such campuses in Kerteh (Terengganu) and Bintulu (Sarawak) soon as well as a branch campus in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in February next year.
Niosh would also introduce two new occupational safety passports -- Niosh-Titan Safety Passport (NTiSP) and Niosh-Port Safety Passport (NPtSP) -- next year to promote safe and healthy working environment in factories and ports in Malaysia, he added.
