Star: KUALA LUMPUR: The pollution at Sungai Selangor which caused piped water in Klang Valley to smell came from various sources, Natural, Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said.
“The leachate that had polluted the waterways is not solely from the Bukit Tagar landfill,” he told reporters after visiting the Air Hitam landfill in Hulu Selangor yesterday.
Azmi was asked if there were other sources that had polluted the river causing piped water to emit a foul smell.
On Tuesday, Azmi was reported to have said that the pollution was caused solely by leachate from the Bukit Tagar landfill.
“From the air I could see the leachate flowing into many areas; however, I need to inspect from the ground to see exactly where the leachate goes,” Azmi explained.
“This is not the only problem happening here, there are other states with similar problems,” he added.
Azmi stressed that Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, which operates three water treatment plants along the river, had to upgrade their water treatment system to ensure that there would not be foul smell in the water.
He said a committee comprising representatives from the Health, Housing and Local Government and Energy, Water and Communications ministries would look into the water pollution problem.
