Docs still have to follow guidelines

Doctors who want to publicise their services are free to do it in their own style, provided they adhere to the guidelines. There is no set format, Health director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Merican said.
“The content of whatever they send to the Medical Advertisement Board (MBA) will be checked, and if all is in order, the advertisement will be passed for publishing,” he said in an interview yesterday.
He said that doctors could not, for instance, declare that they were the “best cardiologist”; nor could they put down other doctors.
Also, doctors were not allowed to mention how many operations they had performed previously, because no one could verify such information.
“The ministry has loosened the rules about this (services provided by doctors) so that the public will no longer be in the dark about doctors who are available in Malaysia.
“Thus, they won’t need to run to Thailand or Singapore for operations which can be performed here,” he said.
