KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry is drafting two bills to control and supervise beauty specialists and their practices, cosmetic products and the use of beauty equipment, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Latiff Ahmad said Friday.
He said the bills -- Medical Equipment Bill and the Cosmetics Bill -- were designed to protect the rights of consumers and ensure growth of the country's cosmetics industry.
Both bills are expected to be tabled in parliament next year.
"The doctors and specialists have the Medical Act but those who are not doctors have standards in terms of their profession. We do not want the beauty specialists to perform like doctors," he said at the opening of the CosmoBeaute Asia 2005 exhibition at the Putra World Trade Centre, here.
Dr Latiff also said that last year the ministry's enforcement division confiscated unregistered cosmetic products valued at RM26 million
