The National Cancer Council (Makna) hopes to collect 30 per cent of the 94.5 billion pieces of one sen coins circulating in the country during its "Sens 4 Lives" donation campaign for cancer patients.
Makna president Datuk Mohd Farid Ariffin said donation boxes would be placed in public areas and schools for the first phase of the campaign.
He said the campaign would start at the end of this month and was expected to go on for the next five years.
"Hopefully, through this approach we will be able to assist more cancer patients," Mohd Farid told reporters Monday.
Makna has helped paid the medical and other expenses of some 72,000 cancer patients in 27 hospitals nationwide since its inception 12 years ago.
Mohd Farid said with some 200 projects launched annually and new cancer cases increasing by more than 2,000 each month, Makna would need to raise RM2 million a year to sustain its activities.
"We are working hard to raise funds as we cannot deprive the poor patients from getting the best possible medical treatment that we have," he said.
