PENANG: Breastfeeding corners may be a common feature in supermarkets here if a pilot project gets off the ground.
State Health Department director Dr Ong Chee Leng said with the availability of such facilities, mothers could breastfeed their babies in between shopping.
She said the state Health Department and the Penang Hospital were very keen to promote breastfeeding.
“The first step is to conduct campaigns at supermarkets here to create awareness among mothers and soon-to-be mothers of the benefits of breastfeeding.

“Our next step is to get these outlets to provide facilities for mothers to breastfeed,” she told reporters after opening the Penang Hospital's World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1 to 7) at the Tesco Hypermarket here yesterday.
Also present were Dr Ong's deputy Dr Yasmin Sulaiman, United Nations Development Programme senior advisor Datuk Anwar Fazal and World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA)'s Julianna Lim Abdullah.
Dr Ong said Tesco would be invited to participate in a pilot project by providing breastfeeding facilities.
“If it is a success, we will approach all the outlets here,” she added.
Dr Ong said the outlets could consider converting part of their nappy-changing rooms into breastfeeding corners.
