More 'red eye', sore throat and flu reported as haze worsens

MORE people are complaining of experiencing flu-like symptoms, conjunctivitis or “red eye” and sore throat in the Klang Valley since the worsening of the haze from last week.
Public and private hospitals and clinics are seeing more coming in with these complaints.
Speaking to the New Straits Times, the Kuala Lumpur Hospital consultant pulmonary and critical care physician Datuk Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai said dust particles in the air could cause “red eye”.
He advised the public against rubbing itching eyes as this may lead to bruising and infection.
He said both coarse and fine particles could cause irritation to the eye and lining of the respiratory tract.
This could also lead to runny nose, phlegm, cough and wheezing.
Dr Jeyaindran said those staying out for a prolonged period of time should wash their hands and face as soon as they come indoors.
He advised those in haze-affected areas to stay indoors, increase fluid intake to prevent the mucous lining of the respiratory tact drying.
