From next month, medicine, engineering and technological courses at local universities must be conducted entirely in English.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh announced the directive today after chairing the ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting at a hotel here.
"I have discussed the matter with vice-chancellors and academic staff from all public universities. They have pledged to conduct the courses, such as engineering, medicine and other science and technology-based courses fully in English."
Shafie was commenting on claims by university students that some of the courses were still being taught in Bahasa Malaysia despite a three-year grace period for universities to change the medium of instruction to English.
"Students in schools are taught Science and Mathematics in English but when they enter universities, they find the courses conducted in Bahasa Malaysia. This must be stopped."
Those enrolling in the new academic session in universities this year come from the first batch of Lower Sixth students who were taught Science and Mathematics in English.
Shafie said for courses such as Ethnic Relations and Social Sciences, lecturers could opt to teach either in English or Bahasa Malaysia.
"There may be some hiccups in the beginning during the transition. But we will standardise the terminologies for use at all universities."
