PUTRAJAYA, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysian doctors should adopt a paradigm shift and consider research as part and parcel of their daily work, Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said.
He said the ministry has allocated a hefty RM198.5 million under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for research compared to only RM30 million under the eighth plan. The ministry has never had such a huge fund for research before, he added.
"Yes, provision of healthcare is important and shall remain our bread and butter. But we have to do better than that if we want to energetically contribute to nation building.
"We must consider research as part and parcel of our daily work," he said when opening the International Congress of Medicine organised by the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi Mara, here.
About 1,000 people, among them leaders in the profession, are participating in the three-day congress, which was also attended by Nobel laureate Professor Dr Peter Doherty of the University of Melbourne, Australia.
